Ingredients
Apples
- 4 Medium apples, such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith
- 2 tbsp Brown sugar
- 1 tsp Ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp Fresh lemon juice
- 1 tbsp All-purpose flour
Crumble
- 1/2 cup Old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/4 cup All-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup Packed brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp Ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp Kosher salt
- 4 tbsp Cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Instructions
Prepare a campfire with moderate hot coals. Peel apples if desired. Core and cut apples into approximately 1/2-inch pieces.
Toss apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and flour.
In another bowl combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add cold butter. Use fingertips or a fork to work the butter into the dry ingredients until coarse crumbs form.
Cut four large sheets of heavy-duty foil. Divide the apple mixture among the centers.
Sprinkle crumble mixture evenly over each portion. Fold the foil into sealed packets without crushing the topping tightly against the apples.
Place packets on a grate over moderate coals. Cook approximately 20–30 minutes. Turn the packets carefully once or twice.
Open one packet away from your face. Apples should be soft but not completely disintegrated. Crumble should be hot and buttery.
Remove from heat. Rest 3–5 minutes. Serve warm directly from the foil packets.
