Ingredients
- 4 Medium apples, such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith
- 2 tbsp Brown sugar
- 1 tsp Ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp Fresh lemon juice
- 1 tbsp All-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup Old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/3 cup All-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup Packed brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp Ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp Kosher salt
- 4 tbsp Cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Instructions
- Prepare a campfire with moderate hot coals. Peel apples if desired. Core and cut apples into approximately 1/2-inch pieces.
- Toss apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and flour.
- In another bowl combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add cold butter. Use fingertips or a fork to work the butter into the dry ingredients until coarse crumbs form.
- Cut four large sheets of heavy-duty foil. Divide the apple mixture among the centers.
- Sprinkle crumble mixture evenly over each portion. Fold the foil into sealed packets without crushing the topping tightly against the apples.
- Place packets on a grate over moderate coals. Cook approximately 20–30 minutes. Turn the packets carefully once or twice.
- Open one packet away from your face. Apples should be soft but not completely disintegrated. Crumble should be hot and buttery.
- Remove from heat. Rest 3–5 minutes. Serve warm directly from the foil packets.

Chef's Notes
APPLE CHOICE: A mix of sweet and tart apples creates excellent flavor. BUTTER: Keep the crumble butter cold until assembly for the best texture. OPTIONAL SERVING: Vanilla ice cream may be added if a freezer/cooler setup allows it.
